A properly tied rope halter has no breaking points. This soft and lightweight tool can become dangerous if the horse gets caught in its halter and does not know how to yield to pressure. The Hookilpenn offers a breaking point and releases your horse's head in the event of an accident.
Warning! Even if you use a Hookilpenn, we recommend that you do not tie your horse with a rope halter or leave it in the pasture with one on.
Using the Hookilpenn simplifies halter installation. Each Hookilpenn comes with a diagram that guides you step-by-step to install it correctly on the headstall. Once properly adjusted, you won't need to touch it again. Each time you use the halter, simply slide the halter's attachment loop onto the hook.
The Hookilpenn was invented by the Breton company Perez Sellerie. This innovation, winner of the Jury Prize at the Paris Horse Show Innovation Awards, is made in France.
Horse & Ropes is partnering with Perez Sellerie to recycle your hook. If it breaks, contact us; a recycling program is in place. Recycled Hookilpenns make up 30% of black Hookilpenns.

The Hookilpenn
The Hookilpenn is an accessory designed to facilitate the use of the rope halter by providing serenity and practicality.
This plastic hook attaches to the ethological halter at the headpiece and allows you to quickly attach the halter to your horse's head.
While it does not replace the essential learning of pressure release, fundamental in groundwork, the Hookilpenn helps secure the use of the ethological halter and frees your horse's head in case of an incident.
Two materials are available:
- Polycarbonate: withstands 200kg of load. Recommended for daily use.
- Fiberglass-reinforced polyamide: withstands 300kg of load. Reserved for heavy, explosive, or horses in (re)training. Only available in black ("black PA")
Dimensions: 10 x 4.5cm and weighs 15g
As a manufacturer, we advise against using rope halters for tying.
Even with a plastic hook, it still takes 200kg of force for it to break. The Hookilpenn makes it safer but does not make the rope halter more comfortable if the horse pulls back.
The Hookilpenn fits on halters with a thickness of 6, 6.5 or 8mm.
